Published February 2017, Homo Deus takes New York Times Bestselling author Yuval Noah Harari's previous work Sapiens even further, discussing in detail humanity's future and our quest to turn humans into gods.

Over the centuries, humans have evolved to incredible new heights and achievements, from stone age hunter-gatherers into rulers of the planet. But where are we going from here? For the first time, more humans are dying from eating too much instead of too little, from suicide instead of violence or war, from old age instead of infectious diseases. But that leaves humanity with the need to create new goals...and to make sure we don't destroy ourselves in the process of achieving those goals.

Summary Homo Deus by Yuval Noah Harari Great Books Fast eBook GBF Summary Reviews

For thousands of years, humanity faced the same three problems - famine, plague and war. In the last few decades, per Harari, we've reined in those three problems and made them manageable. Ironically, more people now die from eating too much rather than too little. (Half the world's population is expected to be overweight by 2030.) More die of old age than infectious diseases - the Ebola outbreak only killed 11,000, the Spanish Flue between 50 and 100 million in less than a year. And more commit suicide than are killed by violence or terrorist attacks.

So now, Harari asks, what will we focus on - especially given our new biotechnology and IT powers? An obvious first target should be protecting us from ourselves - specifically Global Warming. Most countries have not yet made any serious economic or political sacrifices to help reduce that threat. (Most disappointing of all, to me, is the U.S.'s latest direction - almost daring the environment to create serious problems.)

The most likely targets will be immortality, happiness, and divinity - morphing from Homo Sapiens to Homo Deus. We already have Ray Kurzweil at Google, and it launching Calico - it's stated mission is 'to solve death.' Already we're physically and mentally able to work longer, and therefore need to reinvent ourselves several times in a lifespan. On the negative side, a growing proportion are now taking illegal and legal psychiatric drugs - becoming the #1 cause of crime. (Harari contends we need to slow down the pursuit of pleasant sensations if we want real happiness.) Upgrading humans into gods may follow biological or cyborg engineering paths.

Economic growth is supposed to be the source of all good things - it urges individuals, firms, and governments to discount anything that might hamper economic growth, such as social equality or saving the planet. Capitalism's #1 commandment is 'though shalt reinvest profits in increasing growth.' Conquering new lands and territories was a way to avoid being blocked by lack of resources. Science has provided a new alternative - discovering new materials and energy sources. Nanotechnology, genetic engineering, AI, and renewable energy are our current hopes for further expansion.

The 'bad news' is that faith in science also works to undermine taking action to mitigate global warming - it will simply create a new market for better sunscreens, cooling systems, etc.

The humanist religion worships humanity - murder is bad because of the terrible suffering it causes the victim's loved ones, etc., not because of a commandment. The liberal branch believes each human is a unique individual and should be given as much freedom as possible to follower their inner voice and experience the world. Socialism says liberals are too selfish, and demands focus on how your actions affect others.

What will happen to jobs in the 21st century? Wealth could become concentrated in the hands of a tiny elite who own the all-powerful algorithms, or the algorithms might come to own businesses and humans could end up working for and paying rent to algorithms. .
If all of life could be explained by data, then !mankind will soon be in Nirvana. But remember that Nirvana means extinguishment.
The author skillfully crafts the argument that following leaders, governments, and companies who spin their stories that they know best for us and pursue technologies for perceived advantages has likely very unintended and undesirable consequences. Be attentive and beware.
